Engineering Societies for College Students
We talked about the reasons to join an engineering society. Now let’s talk about some of the societies you may have heard about. The most popular college engineering societies can vary depending on the university and the specific engineering discipline, but some of the most widely recognized and respected organizations include:
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
As mentioned earlier, ASME is one of the largest and oldest mechanical engineering societies in the world and has a presence on many college campuses. It provides the opportunity to participate in competitions, conferences and provides learning resources.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization for electrical and electronics engineering and has a significant presence in many universities.
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International)
SAE International is a professional organization for engineers in the automotive and aerospace industries. It has a strong presence in many universities with mechanical or aerospace engineering programs.
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
NSBE is a student-run organization that focuses on increasing the number of Black students pursuing engineering degrees and careers, and has a presence on many college campuses.
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
SWE is a global organization that aims to support and empower women in engineering and technology, and has a significant presence on many college campuses.
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
SHPE has over 10,000 student and professional members across the United States, with a mission to empower Hispanic engineering students and professionals to achieve their full potential. SHPE provides resources, programs, and networking opportunities to its members, including scholarships, career fairs, mentoring, and leadership development programs.
Tau Beta Pi
Tau Beta Pi is a national engineering honor society that recognizes academic excellence and promotes service, leadership, and integrity among engineering students. It has chapters on many college campuses across the United States.
Summary
These are just a few examples of popular college engineering societies. Many universities also have local chapters of professional engineering societies, as well as specialized student organizations that focus on specific engineering disciplines or areas of interest.
